Some authors are ready to jump in with both feet. Others want to dip a toe in first.
No matter where you are in your writing journey, we are here to help.

Note: We are not currently accepting books with adult language or steamy, LGBT+, or demonic genres.  If you have a question about if your manuscript falls into one of these categories, please use the contact us form and ask! Thank you for your understanding.

CRITIQUE PARTNER, ALPHA READER, BETA READER

If you need someone to bounce ideas off of while you write, we are willing to become your critique partner. You can email us as many times and about as many ideas as you want and we will respond in a timely fashion. We will ask you questions, offer out-of-the-box ideas, and push back with "devil's advocate" to help you flesh out your ideas to become the best they can be. Rates will vary based on extent of input requested but begin at $25/per week or $100/per month

An alpha reader is for a few chapters at a time as you write. We read your first rough draft and provide feedback on the appropriateness of where the story seems to be going.  You can expect a paragraph or two of notes per chapter. Rates will vary based on genre.

Beta readers come after your first self-edit. This feedback is not as detailed as a developmental edit, but it is more involved than alpha reader feedback. You can expect notes throughout your manuscript about first impressions of plot, readability, and flow of your story; genre, audience, and POV appropriateness; major plot holes; and anything else than made us pause in reading your story. Rates will vary. Manuscripts under 10k words - $20

DEVELOPMENTAL EDIT

This is the first major edit most manuscripts receive and looks at the big picture in much closer detail than a beta read. You can expect several notes per page as well as a paragraph after each chapter about POV, character, plot, and subplot development; plot holes and continuity; action/narration and action/dialogue pacing; and chapter length and placement. Rates will vary. Manuscripts under 10k words - $30

LINE EDIT

A line edit usually comes after a developmental edit, because a line edit (also commonly called a copy edit) looks at your manuscript line by line. We help you break down your manuscript so you can build something even stronger. Some manuscripts will receive as few as two or three notes per page; others may receive an alternate wording suggestion for almost every sentence. Our goal is to help you create a masterpiece, not rewrite your book with our voice.

You can expect notes throughout your manuscript about word choice, sentence rhythm, syntax, showing vs telling, active vs passive, confusing or "clunky" phrases, and too many pronouns, to name a few. Rates will vary. Manuscripts under 10k words - $50

PROOFREADING

This is the last step of editing. We follow the Chicago Manual of Style and focus solely on spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. We do not format your manuscript. Rates will vary. Manuscripts under 10k words - $40

Line edit, proofread, and blurb:
From our first encounter, Jessica was very professional and thorough. I was surprised at how quickly she returned my request for a quote for services. The amount of time she spent working for me made this service an amazing value, but the quality of what she did for me was the very best part. Jessica was able to find many ways to improve what I had written and to make the manuscript more cohesive. Her communication was so thorough; I really appreciate her dedication to my story; I know that she truly cared about helping me polish what I had written. I am grateful to Jessica and Enchanted Inkwell for this excellent service.
